Cullinan<\/h4>\n

Number 1 on our list of the 10 most famous diamonds in history is the Cullinan gemstone. It is the largest rough diamond ever found. Its carat weight is 3106.75. It was discovered in 1905 at the Premier Mine, South Africa and was named after the mine owner- Thomas Cullinan. The stone took eight months to split and cut, with three people working on it, 14 hours a day. After processing, Cullinan produced 9 large and 96 smaller diamonds. The great star of Africa<\/h4>\n

In second place we place perhaps the most famous diamond obtained from Cullinan's original rough piece, namely - The Great Star of Africa or Cullinan I. At 530.2 carats, this gem is the second largest cut diamond in the world. The stone is mounted at the top of the Royal Sceptre, which is presented during the coronation of the rulers of England. Golden jubilee diamond<\/h4>\n

The Golden Jubilee diamond is the largest cut diamond in the world. With its staggering 545.67 carats, it surpasses the Great Star of Africa by 15.37 carats. It is distinguished by its beautiful brown colour. It was discovered in 1985 in the same mine where Cullinan (Premier, South Africa) was found. The Centenary diamond<\/h4>\n

Fourth place in our list is occupied by the Centenary diamond. This beautiful gemstone was also discovered in the Premier mine, in 1986. In its rough form, the stone was an incredible 599 carats. It took about 3 years to cut and was the work of master diamond cutter Gabby Tolkowski. The finished diamond weighs 273.85 carats and sparkles with 247 facets. Orloff<\/h4>\n

Next on our list is the Orloff diamond, which has a long and illustrious history. With its 190 carats and transparent bluish-green color, this Indian rose cut diamond is extremely rare. It was discovered in the 17th century in India. It is believed to have originally been set as a diamond eye in a statue of Vishnu (one of the Hindu gods) in a temple in Srirangam. In 1747, during the Carnatic Wars, the diamond was stolen from a French soldier and sold. It travelled to Europe and was eventually purchased by Count Gregory Orloff, after whom it was named. The Count gave the diamond to Catherine the Great as a romantic gesture. Regent<\/h4>\n

This gemstone, with exceptional transparency and perfect cut, is renowned as the most beautiful diamond in the world. Discovered in India in 1698, the diamond was acquired by the Governor of England, Thomas Pitt. The stone is cut in a cushion shape and weighs 140 carats. The French regent Philip II (from where the diamond takes its name) bought it in 1717 from Pitt. The diamond thus became part of the jewellery of a number of French royalty. It first adorned the crown of Louis XV at his coronation in 1722. It then adorned the crown of Louis XVI in 1775. Later in 1801, it was mounted on the end of the First Consul's sword. In 1825 it was worn at the coronation of Charles X, and during the Second Empire, it adorned the tiara of Empress Eugenie. During the French Revolution it was stolen and was in obscurity until it was finally discovered, one imagines, in an attic in Paris in 1887. Hope diamond<\/h4>\n

Seventh on our list of the 10 most famous diamonds in history is the Hope diamond. This gemstone has had a long and glorious history before being linked to a string of bad luck for its owners. At 45.52 carats, it is the largest dark blue diamond in the world. Its distinctive colour is due to impurities of boron. It was discovered in India and sold to Louis XIV, who gave it the name \"Blue Diamond of the French Crown\". The diamond was stolen during the French Revolution and reappeared 20 years later with its new name \"Hope\", named after its owner Henry Thomas Hope. It is particularly famous for the alleged \"curse\" believed to have caused the beheading of Louis XIV and his wife, and for the rumored financial and personal misfortunes of many of its owners. Koh-I-Noor<\/h4>\n

Translated from Persian, \"Koh-I-Noor\" means \"Mountain of Light,\" and its name derives because of its stunning beauty. This 105.6-carat diamond supposedly dates back two thousand years and boasts the longest history among diamonds. Over the centuries, many battles have been fought over the Kohinor and it has been in the possession of many nations such as the Persians, Afghans and Indians. In the mid-19th century, in a battle between the Sikhs and the British, it was taken by the East India Company and later presented to Queen Victoria when she was given the title of Empress of India. Taylor-Burton diamond<\/h4>

Ninth place in our list is occupied by another incredible stone mined from the Premier mine, namely the infamous Taylor-Burton diamond. The stone weighs 69.4 carats and is cut in a pear shape. As you can guess from the name, Richard Burton purchased this stone as a gift for his wife Elizabeth Taylor. The diamond was originally mounted on a breathtaking ring. However, the actress felt that the gemstone was too heavy to wear as a ring and commissioned a diamond necklace specifically for it. The necklace was designed to fit perfectly around Taylor's neck. After her second divorce from Burton, Elizabeth Taylor auctioned the gem and donated the money to charity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Tenth on the list, but not last in beauty, is the Sancy diamond. The history of the 55.23-carat pear-shaped pale yellow diamond dates all the way back to the 1400s, when the stone belonged to Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. After his death in battle, the gem changed hands several times, eventually ending up in the jewelry collection of a French diplomat named de Sancy, hence its name. The stone was loaned to Henry III of France, who wore it as an ornament on his hat. De Sancy sold the diamond in 1605 and over the next three centuries it was owned by members of the English monarchy, an Italian cardinal, an Indian prince and a Russian nobleman. In 1978, the diamond was sold to the Louvre, where it remains on display today.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
