Cleaning and maintenance

Many of your daily activities can negatively affect the appearance of
your jewelry. To keep your favourite jewellery looking flawless, please keep the following tips in mind:

Remove your jewellery whenever you shower or wash your hands, this prevents the build-up of particles, especially in the more inaccessible areas that reduce the shine.
The same is recommended when swimming (in chlorinated pools, sea water) or exercising, for example working out.
If you wear several pieces of jewellery at the same time, you run the risk of scratching or damaging softer gemstones, so we advise arranging them in such way so they don't touch.
Avoid contact with cleansers, body lotions, hairspray, perfumes.
Avoid exposing your jewellery to very high temperatures or large temperature amplitudes.

At Efir, we always recommend that you make a habit of removing all your precious jewelry when you're at home doing chores, getting ready for bed, or going to the bathroom. By doing so, you extend their life, protect them from dirt, scratches and wear. With this small habit, your jewelry will last longer in perfect condition and will need less maintenance.

If you still want to wear your jewellery every day without taking it off, at Efir we will advise and select the most suitable gemstones for you and tailor the design to protect it and make it durable enough.

How to clean and maintain your jewellery

Maintenance

Over time, depending on how often you wear it, your jewelry may need to be repolished, matte-finished, or rhodium-plated. White gold jewelry always has a rhodium coating, which, once worn away, reveals the natural color of the white gold. Depending on the alloy and karat weight, it may turn more or less yellow, and if this bothers you, a new coating can be applied. Please contact us if you think your Efir jewelry needs maintenance.

We advise you to store your jewellery separately from each other in a box (to avoid covering with dust), so that they do not get scratched and tangled. The best method for packing while traveling is in individual pouches or small plastic zip lock bags. Pack the earrings separately from each other. Stow them in a place in your luggage where no pressure will be exerted or in a hard box. While it’s not the most aesthetically pleasing solution, you can wrap each piece of jewelry in a tissue or paper for extra protection.

Natural gemstones vary in hardness and durability, which is why they require different care. Some gemstones are highly sensitive to sudden temperature changes, while others should not be exposed to heat sources or direct sunlight. When cleaning your jewelry, you should check whether the stone or metal is affected by acids, alcohol, ammonia, chlorine, or other substances.

You can clean your jewelry daily with a microfiber cloth. If it needs a deeper clean, you can do so using a very soft toothbrush and mild liquid soap (pH-neutral) over a soft cloth placed on a flat surface (do not do this over the sink). Gently scrub all areas, especially under the jewelry settings. This method is not suitable for all types of gemstones (such as opals, pearls, and some emeralds); read more in the detailed article on our blog.

Professional ultrasonic cleaning is the best method, but ONLY for certain types of jewelry, as this method can damage some gemstones. If you are unsure which method is best for your jewelry, please contact us.

Proper storage, care, and cleaning of your jewelry are essential to keeping it in pristine condition for many years to come. You can find our tips in our guide—Jewelry Care.
