When we hear the word diamond, we usually think of the classic round (brilliant) cut, which is also the most famous among gemstones. And it's undoubtedly a classic for a reason, but for those of you who prefer something different, there are subtleties where you can optimize your budget while maintaining the best look of your chosen diamond.
Technically, the "cut" of diamonds is one of the four "C "s, the system gemologists use to grade the quality of diamonds. They are "cut", "clarity" (how clean the stone is - how free of inclusions and imperfections), "color" and "carats" (unit of weight). "Cut" refers to how perfectly the diamond has been cut, or in other words, faceted. Faceting has the greatest impact on the brilliance of diamonds.
Based on the quality of their workmanship, cuts are graded as "Poor", "Fair", "Good",
"Very Good" and "Excellent", and participate as a pricing factor. Usually the evaluation of the cut of diamonds is based on the indicators - proportion, symmetry and degree of polishing. Each shape has a different type, number and placement of facets that ultimately determine the brilliance of a diamond. Facets are the flat, polished surfaces of the diamond. Like small mirrors, each facet is precisely cut and proportioned to maximize the diamond's ability to collect and reflect light.
We are now going to introduce you to some of these wonderful diamond shapes!
We'll start with the most popular cut of all, the brilliant. This popularity is due to its timeless and elegant look that makes it a perfect option for almost anyone, but mostly to its brilliance. This shape usually comes with 58 facets that best showcase the brilliance and play of light in the stone. A perfectly cut brilliant makes a full internal reflection of light, and this phenomenon is what gives it the most impressive sparkle of all the shapes. A great advantage of this kind of cut is that it conceals inclusions very well. You can safely bet on a stone up to the "SI1/2" range for clarity and "I/J" for color, and allocate your budget toward a higher carat weight. We also advise you not to compromise on cut and fall below "Good". With a well cut round diamond, the sparkle will impress in any piece of jewelry.
Oval diamonds have a classic look with a modern twist. They came into use in jewellery in the 1960s. Today it is a popular shape in all types of jewelry, especially in engagement rings. This cut is similar in number of facets to brilliant cut, but the shape of the stone is more elongated than the classic round. It hides imperfections relatively well - precisely because of the many facets that refract light. Unlike brilliant, however, it shows colour easily. With J or I indications for color, you'll observe a slight yellowing at the edges of the stone, so opt for a more colorless diamond. A big plus of this shape is that it elongates the fingers and stands really elegantly. An important feature of the oval is the so-called "bow tie", a dark effect that is highly visible with a poorer cut. Most ovals have a comparative "bow tie" and it ranges from almost invisible to very distinct. Of course it is preferable to be less visible. And let's finish by saying that because of its elongated shape, a stone with this cut may appear optically larger, compared to one in another shape with the same carat weight.
Marquise shaped diamonds have a look that is sure to stand out. The narrow and elongated elliptical shape of the stone covers the fingers as much as possible compared to other cuts, and the stone appears significantly larger than other stones in the same carat weight. Like the oval, it disguises inclusions well, at the expense of colour, so we advise you to go for a colour no lower than H/I. They also look great set in an "East-West" style.
Pear-shaped or also can be found as drop-shaped diamonds, get their name from the shape they resemble, namely pear/drop. This type of cut is a combination of two others- brilliant and marquise. At one end, the stone is elongated and ends in a pointed point, while at the other it is rounded. Of course with this shape we will also have the same tips as with the other two of which it is composed. It hides imperfections well, but shows colour at the edges. Care should also be taken for the visible "Bow tie" effect we mentioned with the oval shape. This lovely cut undoubtedly has the advantages of elongation shapes and especially the optically larger view of the diamond.
Pear cut diamonds look amazing in engagement rings, in "East-West" setting, "Toi et Moi" and basically anywhere.
Because of its facet placement, this shape is characterized by exceptional brilliance. The Princess cut is generally referred to as a square shape, but depending on the length-to-width ratio, the diamonds can appear more rectangular.
This type of cut is perfect for disguising inclusions, but you should keep in mind that the color stands out with it. This means that you can opt for a lower clarity, at the expense of a more colorless diamond. A big plus of diamonds in this shape is the better price at which they trade, compared to round or oval diamonds of the same size and quality.
Cushion-shaped diamonds are popular among vintage jewellery lovers. It is one of the oldest diamond cuts, but has recently seen a resurgence in popularity. This shape is similar to a cushion, hence the name "Cushion cut". It is one of the most complex cuts and can range from square to rectangular in shape with rounded edges.
In terms of brilliance, the cushion shape resembles a brilliant and allows you to be flexible with the clarity and color of the diamond and allocate resources to the carat weight. The most well-known schemes by which a diamond is cut in cushion shape are "Cushion modified brilliant " and "Cushion brilliant".
If you are looking for a way to make your ring stand out without being too out of the ordinary, or you like to pay homage to older diamond styles, this shape is the right choice for you!
Emerald cut diamonds are rectangular, with facets that look like small stepped edges on all sides of the stone. Diamonds in this shape reflect light with less but more distinct glare. Unlike the variations listed above, clarity is of the utmost importance for this cut. Because of its large flat rectangular area in the face of the diamond (table), even small dark imperfections will be easily visible to the naked eye. We advise against falling below VS2. The place where you can optimize your budget is the color, where you can easily get to I/J without your diamond looking too yellowish. The elongated shape will also transfer the optical effect to shorter fingers, as well as take up more finger area compared to square cuts.
If you want a stunning and unique diamond option, this is one to consider!Asscher cut diamonds are also step cut, similar to emerald cut diamonds. The two shapes differ in that Asscher cut are square and Emerald cut are rectangular. Here we have more facet steps, which result in the diamond having exceptional brilliance. The slightly bevelled edges, give an octagonal shape, great for a vintage Art Deco look. It was during this period that they were created and quickly gained popularity. The vintage style and the brilliant mirror effect of the stepped cut make this an eye-catching shape. Like all other cuts, this one has its pros and cons. This is one of the most striking step cuts and definitely a favorite of ours, but a poor cut will have a detrimental effect on the stone, so you must prioritize its quality.
Overall, there is less but more distinct and stronger glare compared to cuts with more and smaller facets. It combines very well with vintage designs and always catches the eye. Keep an eye out for balanced and symmetrical "windmills" (the effect that facets create). Regarding clarity, again we advise not to fall below VS2 if you want to ensure that you will not have any inclusions visible to the naked eye. The minuses of the Asscher cut are that it looks optically smaller compared to the round and especially compared to the elongated cuts. Despite its cons, this type of geometric cut is simply glamorous!
This really is a wonderful choice for anyone looking for a creative diamond option!
The most romantic of the "fancy" shaped diamonds is the heart. The heart has always been a symbol of love, which is why this cut is so sentimental. The shape is unique, rare and often seen as a more special or personal choice of stone. It is not as popular as the brilliant cut, but is becoming more and more beloved.
The first known version of this shape dates back to the 16th century when Mary, Queen of Scots, gave Queen Elizabeth a heart-shaped diamond ring. Although, this stone can be used for a wide range of jewelry, it is most commonly used in engagement rings. One of the most romantic "fancy" shaped diamonds is the heart-shaped diamond.With this shape, the quality of the cut plays the most important role. It is good to balance between width and length for maximum brilliance.
